We Were So Close
If you saw our previous blog post, we mentioned that we were finally comfortable committing to a release for Duple Dragon 2.0, our very long in development love letter to Duple Dragon and definitive version of the game. In the time since that announcement, we continued to squash bugs and get the final features finished up for release.
We are now nearly done, but in the umpteenth hour we find ourselves yet again faced with major technical difficulties from Unity, the game engine Duple Dragon is built in. Long story short, we haven’t been able to get a successful build of the game created at all, which means we can’t release anything even if we wanted to.
What’s the Plan?
For now Caleb is working through the build issues, and we’re crossing our fingers they’re fixable without major changes to the project. At the moment things are looking a little grim, but we’re not out of options yet and are still trying things.
We’ve been vocal in the past about how problematic Unity is in these critical moments, so let this be another warning to any prospective game developers reading: use something else. By the time you run into these kinds of problems, you’re going to be so deep in the project that it takes huge effort to pivot. Save yourself the trouble and start with something else to begin with, and build and test your game constantly throughout development.
2.0 Preview Videos
We also mentioned in our previous post we were going to be showing off some videos of the differences between 2.0 and 1.0, so you can see how much better things are looking. That’s still our plan, but we’ve been delayed on getting those videos recorded and edited because of these technical problems.
To sum up this whole post, we’ve got issues and we’re trying to fix them, and we’ll probably be pretty quiet until they’re fixed. Please send us some good vibes, as we are very over the delays at this point!
Thanks for reading, and wish us luck.
– Caleb, Ian, and Souren
